Sitting disease

I can't believe it! I'm doing everything I'm supposed to do, and then they spring a new disease on me: Sitting Disease.

It's a disease caused by... too much sitting. Luckily as a mom there's not much chance of me sitting too much. But as a blogger, I dó sit. Working behind my computer.

And I always did so feeling pleasantly smug. Knowing I had run my 3 miler, so I was off the hook. I have even started crosstraining!

So WTF?

Running does not protect you from Sitting Disease

There's so much running protects you from. I always love reading the lists:

  • High cholesterol

  • High blood pressure

  • Osteoperosis

  • Stress

  • Heart attacks

  • and the list goes on

But one thing is nót on this list. And that's Sitting Disease. Running does not protect you against that. In fact,it gets even worse. Studies have shown that runners may actually sit móre hours after a long run.

Do you suffer from Sitting Disease?

It's easy to diagnose yourself! Just answer this question:
'How many hours a day is your butt parked on a chair?'

If the answer is: 'Nine hours or more,' you have Sitting Disease according to the official guidelines.

Get the cure now!

Luckily you can cure yourself too. It's easy:
You have to sit less, and move more.

Put in at least 10.000 steps a day,  and make sure you spread them out during the day. Alternate sitting down with movement. Just getting your run in, isn't enough. You have to make sure you move around during the rest of your day too.

As moms we have the advantage of having kids! Kids are messy and demanding. They want you to do stuff, and you have to clean up after them. All that is great to cure Sitting Disease.

How many hours a day do you sit?

I guess I fall into that category. I work on the computer about 12 hours a day. That's why I have to take time in the morning to at least run around the block a few times.

Get off your butt! I can't believe how much of a difference a 10 minute walk makes. Thanks for sharing with Let's Get Real (I'm co-hosting this week)!

I sit for a good part of my day, but luckily the campus is so big, I also walk a lot. I wore a pedometer for a while and I walk 2-3 miles a day on campus. At home, if I find myself sitting too long, I take a walk around the block. I think people take this too lightly, but it really is another thing to think about when it comes ti our health!

Sometimes your environment can help you move enough. I had to walk my kids to school for a long time, and looking back that was a great way to make sure I took enough steps!

So true! Sitting is a big problem. I just got a standing desk at work, and I love it! Thanks so much for sharing this with the Let's Get Real party.

Oh, My. Word. I, too, may have sitting disease...if for no other reason than blogging and another project I'm working on. Oh well, guess my sitting disease will continue because I just don't forsee myself standing to blog or work in Photoshop :)

Oh man! I kind of hate that I probably fall into this category because I have a desk job. Although I do get up A LOT. I definitely struggle to get the 10,000 steps a day when I don't get my run in.

I really need to get on top of my exercise this month and moving more is the way forward. I'm busy 'casing' pedometers to make me more accountable and will start by aiming for the 10k steps a day.

Thanks for linking up with our Worth Casing blog of the month at Agent Mystery Case. We have just announced our winner and open the linky for July.

Definitely noticing how hard it is to get those 10,000 steps now that my kids are grown!

Great tips! And I love that picture of the potato in the chair! Although I do get out to run or walk 2-to-4 miles on most days, I'm sure I sit for too long at other times. Thanks for the reminders.
