Running fragments in The Rose Petal BeachIn this first fragment Dorothy Koomson paints a picture of those familiar feelings every new runner encounters!
How did I manage to get talked into this? I'd asked myself many times of the last few runs. I never had a definitive answer: it was something to do with fun, and enjoying being around Miarabella and her energy. Putting one foot in front of the other was a challenge that I'ld never set myself but I was enjoying on many levels - most of them masochistic.
I stopped, placed both palms on my grey jogging-bottom-covered thighs and heaved as much breath into my lungs as I could manage. My running gear was pristine because it was only used once a week. Mirabelle's running gear was pristine because she had a lot of running clothes.
Therapeutic effect of running
In this second fragment Dorothy Koomson describes the therapeutic effect of running. How running can help you when life gets rough.
I want to go for a run. I want the unyielding ground beneath my trainer-covered feet as I pound it with all the strength I have in my legs, and I want the wind, usually strong and unforgiving on the seafront, to slam into me, clearing my head en freeing my body.
I want to feel each knot of anxiety unwinding itself as I run down the streets to the seafront. Today, I want to run and run and not turn back. I want to keep going until my body collapses, until the physical pain erases all the emotional agony that is excavating my heart.
