I jiggle, therefore I am

this girl can

I stumbled on this beautiful video that's all about promoting sports for women. The campagne is called: #ThisGirlCan.

The goal of #ThisGirlCan is helping women achieve a healthy body image. Which is why you'll actually see réál women running, swimming and playing sports. These ladies are a lot more 'real' than the girls from the Dove commercial.

It's lovely to see all these female bodies in action. And the joy and zest for life they exude.

Why the  #ThisGirlCan campagne

The #ThisGirlCan campagne is an initiative of Sport England. They discovered that there are less English women who participate in sports than men. At the same time, about 75% of English women says she would líke to move more.

'Why is that?' the people at Sport England wondered. So they did some research and discovered that it's mostly fear that's holding women back.

  • Fear of not being good enough
  • Fear of not being able to keep up with the rest
  • Fear of becoming sweaty
  • Fear of looking stupid
  • Fear of jiggling body parts

Lots of these fears are being fed by commercials featuring über slim and sleek sports women.

Besides fear, there's also guilt. Young moms feels guilty about taking time away from their families. While at the same time they feel guilty about setting a bad example.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't! That's motherhood for you!

Here's what Kate Dale, member of Sport England has to say:

'Our manifesto for the campaign emphasizes that it doesn’t matter whether you’re rubbish or an expert, it just matters that you’re a woman and you’re doing it, and we wanted to show that. So there’s no airbrushing, no Photoshopping, and every drop of sweat you see is real. Our director worked them hard during the shoot. It’s a sassy celebration of active women and girls designed to normalize sport and activity by showing how real women, ones we can identify with, have overcome their fear of judgment by simply getting out there and enjoying it. We adopted a humorous, confident attitude that allowed our women to show they didn’t take themselves too seriously. It is a campaign that says to women: If someone has a problem with me doing sport, let it be their problem. It really doesn’t matter if you run like Phoebe from Friends or Paula Radcliffe—the point is you are running, and that is worth celebrating.'

I love this post....I waited until 38 to start running, 39 to start playing tennis, 41 to take my 1st surf lesson....why did I wait, because I was always self-conscious about not being fast enough or coordinated enough, until I got too old to care....I hope that ads like these inspire other girls/women to not wait as long as I did. www.momontherunsnatiy.com

I can understand you miss running! I would hate to have to give it up. Even though I often don't feel like running!

I was in my thirties before I started to run. But that was because I used to think sports were terrible.

I love that! I played soccer 8 months pregnant last year with my kids, and had a blast. Now I'm running again so that when the next opportunity to play presents itself, I'll be ready! And yes, I jiggle.
