Gym Class in high school

This week my sixteen year old daughter had to run 80 metres in 14 seconds during Gym Class. Unfortunately it took her 17 seconds the first time, and 16.44 seconds the second time.

What can I say: my daughter reminds me of me, during my highschool years! I was terrible at anything sporty, and used to dread Gym Class. I found the best way to get through them was to keep a low profile. So I spend most of my time lurking behind the bushes, praying my gym teacher wouldn't notice me.

Unfortunately my daughter's gym teacher has noticed her, and said to her: 'You don't do any athletics in your spare time, now do you?!'
Needless to say, this did nothing for my daughter's motivation!

So I told her: 'Don't let him get to you. I was just like you, and look at me now! I'm actually a Runner!'

But that is to no thanks to my gym teacher.

How did you like Gym Class during high school?

That is exactly the reason that I became a PE teacher. I was not athletic in school but always wanted to be and tried my hardest. I wanted to help the kids that weren't athletically inclined to improve their skills so they could be successful and enjoy being active.

I was taught that girls who were athletic were well weird sweaty creatures from another planet. My mother was not active and raised me that ladies didn't sweat. I had asthma so my parents sent me to swimming and tennis which to my mother were not "athletic pursuits". However, I was never great at both. I was allowed to dance because well that was beautiful not "athletic". How times have changed since those days for me too. I am a runner at 36. I have a little boy who at two is my inspiration for staying active and healthy. I have completed my first and second half with the second half 6 min and 40 lbs lighter. I may not run a marathon but dang it I try hard...and that is all that counts.

Paige, that's beautiful!
And obviously one's history with sports is absolutely nót a predictor for the future!

I hated, no, loathed gym class. I have always been heavy set so I was always a little behind. I used to try my hardest to keep up with everyone but one day I just gave up. I was tired of being made fun of by the thin popular girls, my gym teachers were awful to me. I am still heavy now but I am trying to get into shape. I don't run just yet but I do like to jog. I hated P.E. in hs! Although I loved swimming and gymnastics I was not the best... I never understood why anything athletic always made me hurt until many years later when an awesome doc told me I probably had RA even back then! Hopping along, trying to catch up on my Sunday Blog Hops still! Please follow back @ http://www.pargasjunkyard.wordpress.com and/or on facebook @ http://www.facebook.com/PargasJunkyard

I was very lucky growing up I think - we were exposed to tons of activities and the emphasis was on fun (unless/until you joined the team) but for gym class itself you could totally suck and still have a ball and get some exercise in.

I couldn't stand gym class! I handled it exactly the way you did (and I'm still not terribly sporty). My sister didn't play a single sport in high school, but now she is a sponsored triathlete who competes all over the country! She didn't get into that until after college though. Strange how things work out. I hope your daughter can make the best of it!

oh I HATE TO HEAR THIS. I am a former P.E/Health teacher and the entire reason behind me wanting to teach was to NOT be one of "those gym teachers"...argh! Makes me sick. If our kids don't learn confidence and to achieve things they didn't think possible, then what's the point. We are suppose to be their mentors and motivators when we're in the gym, helping them ENJOY being healthy. Especially when it comes to physical education? Oh my goodness, wish I could meet her gym teacher, I think I'd have a few things to say...maybe more than a few!
