To greet or not to greet. That is the question.

For a while there, I used to shout out a friendly 'Hi!' whenever I encountered another runner.

But after getting the silent treatment in return one too many times, I stopped. But then I felt awkward whenever I saw another runner. Worrying about things like: Should I pretend I didn't see him or her? Avert my eyes? Look down to the ground? Suddenly develop an interest in my smart phone? Pretend I get an important call?

Then I decided: 'Sod it!' I'll do the right thing and greet people. If they can't return the favor, well, that's théir problem. At least I've shown them common courtesey.

Do you greet other runners?

If it's a super busy trail, I don't address every runner that I come by. If it's less busy, I do.

Yes I do, even if it's a nod, doesn't take much to acknowledge a fellow runner.

I always say hello to runners, walkers and neighbors I see out on my run. I know some will ignore me or look away but I feel better when I greet them no matter what.

I totally understand you can't greet everyone if it's very busy.

That's a good one: a nod. I'm going to try that! It's less conspicious than saying 'Hi'.

I suppose that's what it's all about: doing the right thing! And if others don't reciprocate, that's their issue.
